Call for Papers
Australian Ceramics Triennale NSW09
' Facing the Future '

The 1st Australian Ceramics Triennale (formerly the National Ceramics Conference) will be held in Sydney, Australia from 17th July – 20th July, 2009. Facing the Future will focus on the relationship between contemporary ceramic practice and the emergence of diverse social, cultural and technological global forces.

We invite individual papers or suggestions for panels on any aspect of The 2009 Australian Ceramics Triennale’s three broad themes – Facing Asia, Future Practice and Activate / Cultivate. The theme Facing Asia will focus on contemporary ceramics practice in the Asia-Pacific region and its recent global impact. Future Practice aims to identify potential trends within the ceramics discipline by concentrating on the work of emerging practitioners, hybrid and merging praxis, new technologies and materials, and evolving environmental and ethical concerns. The Activate / Cultivate theme seeks to address educational, community, specialisms and local trends in ceramics and its discourses, and provide professional and grassroots support to the practitioner, collector and educator.

Suggested topics include:

  • Alternative sites/sights: working outside the mainstream, outsider art, community art
  • Politics and Place: the changing world of global ceramics, the affect of place on individual practice, social and ethical consequences of ceramic production
  • Education Trends: institutional trends, ceramics in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions, art as therapy, mentors, master/apprentice
  • Hybrid Practices: practitioners using ceramics within an expanded field of visual arts
  • New Technologies: their incorporation into the ceramic medium and process, the social and philosophical affect on studio practice
  • Individual Voices: artist talks about individual and collaborative studio practices
  • Clay and Text: critiques, reviews and meditations on the spoken and written discourse surrounding contemporary ceramics practice in the last decade

After visiting our website, interested parties should address the above themes, however issues relevant to contemporary ceramics that fall outside the major themes will also be considered.

Peer Reviewed Papers

Each paper will be blind reviewed by two reviewers, drawn from the conference organising committee and others selected by the conference organisers.

General Papers (Non-refereed papers)

These papers must still meet normal presentation standards and address the broad conference themes. They will be selected based on relevance to conference themes and suitability to the program.

Please send initially a brief abstract of 250 words and a short biography of no more than 150 words as a single attached Word doc. by email to info@australianceramicstriennale.com. Each abstract should have a cover sheet containing the following: title of paper; name of author(s); address; full contact details. The author’s name should not appear on the abstract itself. If you are proposing a panel the abstract should be 500 words and include a short biography of each panelist. The abstract should fully summarise the paper's arguments. It should not be an introduction. Abstracts should be received no later than 31st October, 2008

Abstracts for peer assessment will be blind peer assessed and applicants notified of the results by 15th January, 2009. Applicants for General Papers will be notified by 31st January, 2009. Successful applicants must submit completed papers by 30th April, 2009. The organizing committee is presently exploring options for publication and further information will be available when confirmed.

ATTENTION POTTERY ARTISTS - WORKING SPACE AVAILABLE IN SE MELBOURNE

Are you looking for a space to park your pottery wheel, bags of clay and get stuck into a good day / night's work - without having to clean up your mess every time?

ARTycles and Treasures is a friendly and exciting new artist-run Art Gallery & Gift Shop right in the heart of the Eastern Bay side suburbs and close to Nepean Hwy, bus stops and across the road from the Railway station on the Frankston line in Highett. In late September, we will be expanding so that we will have more room for exhibitions. We also have the opportunity to retain some kilns from the previous ceramics business that was there. Ideally we would like a pottery artist who would use part of the space and contribute to the rent. Art classes are planned and we would love to have someone like you teaching us and facilitating a group of interested fellow artist types.

If interested, please contact us on 9532 5414 or rkevan@tpgi.com.au .

We are also always looking for quality pottery works in the gallery generally.
